Mike’s Windsurfing

10/11/25

For Michael Compton, windsurfing isn’t just a sport—it’s a way of life. Born and raised on St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Compton grew up on the water. He lived aboard a boat for several years and began racing at a young age alongside his father. That early foundation has shaped a lifelong passion that he now shares with others in Long Beach.

Today, Compton runs Mike’s Windsurfing, located inside Always Kiting on Pacific Coast Highway. The shop is stocked with world-class gear from Starboard, Severne, Windsurfer LT, and a wide variety of foil boards, wings, and kites. Beyond sales, Mike’s Windsurfing is a hub for lessons and on-the-water experiences, welcoming beginners and seasoned sailors alike.

Recently, Compton has shifted much of his focus to the Windsurfer LT—a modern update to the original windsurfing board that helped launch the sport decades ago. Unlike traditional windsurfing gear, the LT isn’t limited to windy days. It doubles as a stand-up paddleboard, is beginner-friendly, and is also the standard board used in international racing events.

“What I’ve learned is that customers don’t just want to buy a board—they want a path forward,” Compton explains. “They want to know they’ll have support as they progress.”

That insight inspired the creation of the LTX (LTXperience), a membership program that blends instruction, community, and friendly competition. After purchasing a Windsurfer LT, members gain unlimited access to clinics, demos, and social outings, all guided by Compton himself.

Compton’s own credentials anchor the program: earlier this year, he claimed third place at the 2025 Windsurfer LT National Championships in Coronado, California.

“It’s hard to find someone more passionate about windsurfing than Mike,” says one local sailor. “He’s not just teaching technique—he’s building a community.”

Whether it’s your first day on a board or you’re aiming for the racecourse, Mike’s Windsurfing offers a way to experience the water on your terms.
